1st Timothy 6:11 Are you a ‘Legalist Moraliser’ or a ‘Gospel based liver’? Just one verse to look at from Paul to Timothy today which leads to so many others in the Bible. This verse could easily, like so many others, be used to justify moralistic preaching and living. Looking down our noses at ‘bad’ people because we are ‘good’ people. WRONG! Christians live differently because of JESUS and his Gospel of grace. Always have and always will. Anything else is Moralism which is wrong. This way of living is about regeneration of a filthy rotten human heart by the gospel of grace through repentance and faith in Jesus for our sins by the power of the Holy Spirit to the Glory of God the Father. Today we see how right back to Genesis with Abraham, Paul and Timothy 2000 years ago, 260 years ago in England and even today how the Gospel of Jesus is the only way to change a single human heart and even a nation.

1st Timothy 6:6-10 Born naked with nothing and you die the same way. But you may make a little, or a lot, of money in your lifetime but how do you, or did you, do it? Verse 10 is one of the most miss quoted verses of scripture going. But money in and of itself is not evil or sinful. How you got it and what you do with it may well be… or it may not be. Find out what true contentment is (and it isn’t a God shaped hole either), what you can learn from the Egyptians and crematoriums and what it all has to do with Jesus. Because at the end of the day it is all about Jesus and always will be, especially as Jesus owns all the money and everything.

Not to get caught up in empty waffle and arguments (there are lots of them ‘so who made God then?… Blah , Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah’). Everyone preaches and we are surrounded by preaching 24/7 on the TV, radio, internet, magazines, newspapers and Timothy and we are to preach good and healthy stuff about Jesus. And then there are the false teachers who teach wrongly that you can make money out of being a Christian. Sadly it wasn’t just in Paul’s day as all you have to do is turn on to a Christian TV station or go into a Christian book store and it is filled with Charlatans galore who as Paul puts it are ‘depraved in mind and deprived of truth’… Because they don’t preach the true gospel of Jesus.

Why did Jesus become a slave? Why did Paul and others refer to themselves as slaves? What does the Old Testament really teach about slavery? And what slavery is going on today? All this points us to Jesus. Wonderful, glorious and gracious Jesus who is the only person who can free us from our slavery to sin.

1st Timothy 5:17-25 Church discipline and money. This time to elders. Are your elders preaching right and true about Jesus? Are they men with a backbone strengthened by Jesus? Then pay them if you can and honour them in your daily life. If they are not then here is how to bust them biblically. Possibly with open public shame. Is all this to increase morality? No but to lead to a truly repentant heart and life of faith because of the grace of Jesus. Our decisions and actions should always be in line with scripture and one bad action can have a consequence for eternity. Just look at Adam’s one sin in the garden…

1st Timothy 5:1-16 Paul here teaches Timothy how we, as part of the family of Jesus, should act to other people. Men, younger and older, and women, younger and older, our families and especially widows. This text covers most areas of life and most people. Paul deals with family life, gossips, idlers, work and play, from the daily grind to the grave – those who are nearly in it really. God has a lot to say about this topic (a lot on widows) and most of it is ‘common sense’. Which isn’t that common and is decidedly rare if not nearly extinct! Not mere moralism but as always from Genesis to Revelation is just God’s simple revealed words and commands to us to obey for our protection, well being and safety. Jesus isn’t a killjoy and wants the best for his people so that we will live to his praise and glory through the amazing gift of grace through the cross.

1st Timothy 4:12-16 Paul here encourages the young lad Timothy to keep it true and strong. Out little Tim wasn’t some immature teenager with saggy trousers but a man of 30-35! So the often miss application of verse 12 to teenagers can be a little annoying. But these truths from Jesus can apply to teenagers, which is the amazing thing about grace. Again this isn’t about moralism and ticking behaviour boxes but showing others that you have a regenerated heart by the Holy Spirit to obey scripture because of the gospel preaching of Jesus. A life of a Christian is not one of saying a prayer and you are in! But one of practice, devotion, diligence and determination all because of our love for Jesus because of His gospel of grace to us, whether we be young or old.

1st Timothy 4:6-11 How is your training schedule? Not down at the gym, which Paul deals with here too, but your spiritual training schedule? This is to become a good servant of Christ Jesus and not climb a corporate ecclesiatical ladder Are you getting solid, biblical teaching about Jesus, the gospel and the true way to live a regenerated life by the Holy Spirit and just be a moronic moralist? Are you encouraging others to follow good teaching and preaching about Jesus too. We should all be listening to and reading true, biblical, Jesus cetered, gospel based theology and sharing that with others. This is what makes for a good servant of Jesus. One who is a disciple of Jesus and encourages others to be a disciple of Jesus too.

1st Timothy 4:1-5 We all follow someone’s preaching. Is it the truth from Jesus or are you following the teaching of a Demon? Paul here warns Timothy, and us, that there is a lot of demonically inspired teaching in the world and it isn’t just the usual suspects but is anything that is not of Jesus and contrary to scripture. This can, and does, get up people’s noses but at the end of the day life isn’t ‘post modernism’ (which is a demonic teaching) which says your truth is right for you. One truth will stand and has always stood and his name is Jesus. Try to honestly prove the historical accuracy of eye witnesses and the history of a nation (Israel) wrong if you think that Jesus is not the truth, the way and the life. God is Good (His name is Jesus), we are bad (and need Jesus’ forgiveness) and Demons are sinfully Ugly.

1st Timothy 3:1-13 Qualifications to be a preacher, elder, deacon, minister, vicar for Jesus. And yes this is for Men only. Guaranteed to be a bone of contention in many ways with many people this passage of scripture. But plain and simply this section of 1st Timothy is not Paul setting up an exam list of moral guidance for Timothy to ‘tick off’ in his search for future pastors. Or is it a moralism list for anyone today to try to achieve and say ‘I am fit for pastoral service’. But is instead a list of qualities that Timothy, and us, can look for in a born again man to see the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit showing that they may be fit for service to the body of Jesus as a pastor. It is all about the grace of Jesus in a renewed man’s heart. Loving Jesus, Living for Jesus, preaching Jesus and leading others to Jesus. Only the Holy Spirit will recreate this in a man through repentance and faith in Jesus.

1st Timothy 2:9-15 One for the ladies. Here we have a few of Paul’s verses that freak out the feminists. Is it really Paul ‘Hating’ women or is there something else? Here are directions for ladies during worship, what a woman should wear, why a woman can’t lead/preach to the assembling of the saints and what they should do. All a Red Rag to the Bulls of Feminsm who hate Jesus. Learn some Hermaneutics (how to read the bible right) and understand which bits of this were cultural to their time and how they were and which bits are for all time. At the end of the day Paul is writing to Timothy to help his Born Again, Bible believing ladies how they should live in this world according to scripture and not his own ideas. This ultimately leads to ladies obeying scripture not to earn their way to Heaven but out of thankfulness to Jesus. Feminism robs females of their God given femininity and only obedience to Jesus because of His Gospel of Grace can restore that. If you have a problem with this or any sections of scripture you have a problem with Jesus and not the preacher.

1st Timothy 2:1-8 Paul here encourages prayer to young Timothy. Prayer for all, in high office or low estate. Jesus did it so should we. At all times, in all seasons and for all reasons because of?… Jesus and the grace that He gives to us by ransoming us from our sin. It is always the Gospel of Jesus that is first and foremost in not only Paul’s mind but all of scripture. That our sins can be forgiven through repentance and faith in Jesus. The God Man Jesus who is the mediator between God and men. Paul then moves on to point out a flaw in men, of which there are many, that can be a hindrance to prayer. We should then pray for our Government, leaders, bosses, teachers, parents, friends and family that they come through repentance to faith in Jesus.

1st Timothy 1:18-20 The Christian life is one of constant War. Not physical with guns and bullets but spiritual for the eternal souls of men and women who otherwise would go to Hell apart from repentance and faith in Jesus. Paul encourages Timothy to continue to fight for the truth of the Gospel of Jesus against false teachers who just send people to Hell – and Paul names two of them here. Paul reminds him that this is his charge to do that was given him to do by prophecy… Now prophecy can be a slightly misused theology so this is a great clearing up of the mess that is in Charismaniac circles. We have a sure word from God and it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ that is right throughout every book of the bible. See the Scarlet Thread for how all of Prophecy of scripture points to Jesus and repentance and faith in Him.

1st Timothy 1:17 One verse but it packs in so much. Paul, after reliving his sinful past of persecuting Christians and then receiving the Grace of God through Jesus, responds in Passionate Praise in thankfulness to the forgiveness of his sins through Jesus Christ alone. Paul really got it and could Praise God because his sins were forgiven by Jesus! Please do remember that Paul was not preaching his praise of Jesus from a position of prosperity but one of persecution! He later had his head chopped off! Jesus is not a crutch to those who are lame but a total, full renewal from spiritual death that we deserve to spiritual life that we don’t. All through Jesus

The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul reminds Tim that he himself used to blaspheme God and persecute Christians. Until he met the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. Now if it wasn’t true that Jesus rose from the dead would you give up the best gig in Jerusalem. Have everyone looking to you as the top guy in the city that everyone wants to hang out with and learn from? No you wouldn’t would you! None of us would in our pride, sin filled selves. But Paul met Jesus – ‘When that happens to me I will believe’ you cry – well do you want to then experience Paul’s life of suffering for Jesus?

1st Timothy 1:8-11 The Law. God’s Law. The Ten Commandments. These can and have been used to subvert the gospel and lead people to legalism but here Paul makes it very clear that the Law of God (10 commandments – not suggestions) show us why we have sinned and need Jesus’ forgiveness. Paul just about covers everyone in this list and a small section of society freak out about this section of scripture (one bit really) when as they have lied, dishonoured their parents, and been idolators (among other things) they are weightily condemned like the all of us. The law is good if used rightly to show we have offended God and deserve his punishment but we get his offer of mercy and Grace through Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. So that those who repent, turn from their sin and in thankfulness put their faith in Jesus to save them get to spend eternal life in Heaven with Jesus, God the Father and the Holy Spirit forever.

1st Timothy 1:3-7 Paul straight out from his opening greeting to young Tim all about Grace in Jesus sets the tone of the letter. ‘BEWARE OF FALSE TEACHERS WHO SAY THEY ARE CHRISTIANS!’ Now this may seem a little harsh but when you consider that these false teachers don’t care about Jesus, just want their own glory, which will ultimately lead people to Hell. You can understand Paul’s concern that Timothy may have some issues to deal with with wing nut preachers and teachers. Just like today. When you consider that most Christian bookshops sell all the latest fluff and not solid theology to lead people to Godliness you know we have a problem in the Church. It hasn’t changed in nearly 2000 years, false teachers still want to have their place as a wolf in sheep’s clothing leading people to Hell for eternity. Not to Jesus with his Grace and Mercy through his bloody sacrifice, in our place, for our sins, on the cross, through His death, burial and resurrection. Any ‘teacher’ comes and says ‘I just want a conversation about what scripture means’ or ‘I am emergent’ or ‘social gospel’ or ‘New Perspective’ RUN!… Run to Jesus and true biblical teaching of Amazing Grace through Jesus.

Passing the Torch. The Apostle Paul passing on the torch of responsibility of the gospel of Jesus Christ to Timothy his true child in the faith. This is one of three pastoral letters of Paul’s to help the future leadership of the church. The others being 2nd Timothy and Titus (for Titus download Chris’ ‘Cretan, Cretin or Christian series) Here in part one Billy goes through the mega theme of the bible – Grace in chapter 1v1&2. God’s loving mercy and grace as displayed by Jesus through his death burial and resurrection for the undeserved and ill-deserved forgiveness of our sins to escape the wrath of God that we have justly earned for ourselves through constant wilful sin against our creator. Grace covers many, many aspects of our lives and here we go through a number of scriptures from the Old and New testaments to show how God’s gift of Grace through Jesus can and does affect all of our lives. From common grace to all including those who hate Jesus and will go to Hell justly through to saving Grace through repentance and faith in Jesus and all the others in-between.

The end of the Scarlet Thread. A final round up of all 66 books of the bible’s historical fact as recorded by eyewitnesses of God’s gracious, merciful and loving dealings with mankind and how it is all about Jesus. From the literal 6-24 hour day creation of the Universe and everything in it, to Adam’s sin and then God’s amazing loving gift of grace to save us paid for in Jesus’ blood. Here we have a quick overview of some of the scriptures all through the bible that show that it is supernatural and all points to Jesus. Including Jesus’ place of birth (Bethlehem), Jesus’ virgin birth, Jesus’ death by crucifixion, Jesus’ burial and Jesus’ resurrection to take the wrath of God on our behalf so that God can justly and lovingly forgive us. All prophesied hundreds of years before the events even happened. You can trust the Jesus and the promises in the bible for your salvation. The Scarlet Thread in the Bible was always about Jesus, It is all about Jesus and always will be about Jesus.

Revelation – the last book of the bible in the Scarlet Thread series. A slightly bizaar, to us, and disturbing book. It is where we get the word ‘Apocalypse’ from so you have an idea that this is not going to have a lot of good in it. Or does it? It is not the ‘Revelation of John’ but a ‘Revelation given to John’ while in exile on Patmos for preaching and teaching about Jesus as the only way to Heaven for the forgiveness of sins. The books first line spells it out. THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST. It is all about Jesus and when he comes back to judge the earth and all who live and have lived on it. Many fruit loops have used elements in this book to freak people out when they get their prophecy charts out but it is just an amazing book wrapping up human history and God’s dealings with man. And it is going to get very ugly, as if it isn’t already. Get ready to be shocked at what has already come true and what is coming and what the number of the beast (666) really means. But ultimately Revelation is a book of comfort for Christians. Especially the persecuted multitudes (not in England just yet). Tthat God is going to judge fairly and send those to Hell who have chosen that path and take those who have repented of their sins, turned from their detestable filthy lives and put their faith in Jesus the Saviour to heaven. Oh yeah Jesus is in charge of Hell. This is not a book on its own but with 500 quotes and allusions to the Old Testament and New Testament Letters in its 404 verses it is a book that not only wraps up the bible in pointing us to the Scarlet Thread of Jesus. But is a book that wraps up human history. That God foretold all the amazing things of Jesus’ virgin birth, life and death, Elements of Israel’s history and other nations hundreds of years before they happened in the Old Testament scriptures, you can trust this book that it is all going to end in a very nasty way. Some will go to Hell and some to Heaven. Which are you? And are you going to repent, turn from your sins and trust the scarlet thread woven in 1500 year of scripture that all lead to the amazing gift of grace given through Jesus Christ?

Jude, the half brother of Jesus. Jude thought his brother was a loon and denied he was the Christ (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3 and John 7:5) but then repented and put his faith in his step brother when after a full public execution and guarded burial he rose from the dead to prove he was God! No argument there then. Jude deals exclusively with the judgement on false teachers who deny that Jesus is God in human form who rose from the dead to pay the price for our sins. And Jude would know! He doesn’t hold back and is vary scathing of the wing dings who pervert scripture and don’t teach the truth about Jesus. Jude plainly states that they are going to get judged along with everyone who lives unrepentant, ungodly lives! Jude ends with a great promise of assurance that God is able to keep all his children (God can not lose a Christian) who have repented and put their faith in Jesus, the only God and saviour.

John’s letters. The disciple whom Jesus loved. 1st John is a ‘Back to Basics’ letter teaching us to trust in Jesus as our advocate in Heaven who removed the wrath of God through his gift of grace via his death, burial and resurrection. John uses the ‘big religious word’ propitiation. Twice! John encourages us to live Godly lives too because of this grace and makes it really simple. If anyone is continually sinning they are of the Devil! And we are not to love the world or anything in or of the world. John is not advocating go and join a monastery but to live free from the pursuit of ‘stuff for stuff’s sake’ and idolatry. Jesus knows we need to work and clothe and feed ourselves. Letters 2 and 3 are short letters that deal with the wing nut false teachers that abounded in their day as well as ours! Don’t take all of what is on Christian TV to be the truth about Jesus! If it looks bonkers then it is! If they are teaching repentance and faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins, check it against scripture, repent and turn form your sins, getting back to basics as John puts it, and love Jesus for His amazing gift of grace.

1st and 2nd Peter are wonderful rich books that encourage us to be faithful to Jesus while suffering as a Christian. This remember was Peter who denied Jesus 3 times before his crucifixion and was then reinstated by grace after Jesus’ resurrection. A reliable eye witness who was driven from Jerusalem by persecution and here as an old man is preparing for his own execution. Crucified upside down! For those who think Peter was a thick fisherman he would have known Aramaic, the Hebrew scriptures, Greek for trade and maybe even a little Latin. How many of us are tri or quad lingual? Peter also deals with holy living in all areas for Christians, with the rise of false teaching and what will happen at the end of the world. It doesn’t look good for a lot of people. All thyis to lead people to the amazing gift of grace of the forgiveness of our sins given through Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection when we repent and put our faith in Jesus.
