Philippians – Prison Passion
11. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!

Paul finishes up with talkling about Jesus, Praising Jesus, and going on about how amazing is … JESUS. IT really is all about Jesus and remember this incrredible joy filled letter was written to a poor group of people buy a guy sitting in jail waiting to have his head chopped off for telling people to worship Jesus. So who do you worship? Is it Jesus or yourself?

10. Money, Money, Money!

Paul nails the prosperity boys again. You either worship God or Money (Jesus said it) and Paul thanks the Philippians for sharing even though he explains he has learnt contentment whether rich or poor! Have we? Have you? Or do you want another plasma screen tv? Paul teaches us a lot about cost and giving and true riches which can only be found in Jesus. Especially as he owns everything in creation. Remember there are no pockets in shrouds and you can take nothing with you when you die, the Egyptians proved that! It will just be you in front of Jesus.

Well Paul covers a lot of ground in this short burst of text. Lots of people, lots of prayer, the need for unity, the beautiful blood, who is guarding and yes the glory is all about JESUS.

8. Straining toward the Goal…

Paul lets us know how much he loves Jesus again. Learning more about Jesus, serving Jesus, telling others about Jesus until one day he will get to be with Jesus forever. Get the idea that Paul loved Jesus! It isn’t an easy walk being a follower of Jesus down here but it is truly worth it. And this world is not our home heaven is. Paul also reminds us that anyone who is not a repentant worshipper of Jesus is his enemy! Just check out the scriptures, which are, all about, JESUS.

7. ‘Profit and Loss’ Righteousness Through Faith in Christ

Self righteous, self assured pompous pratt? Or steaming pile of excrement. All this and circumcision thrown in for good measure (Men get ready to wince, girls get ready to laugh). All to the glory of Jesus! It only makes sense when you see how great Jesus is and how crap we and our efforts are. Don’t take my word for it see what Paul says about his life. His former life and then his life serving Jesus. It is all about worship really. You either worship Jesus or something else, and one day at least you will worship Jesus once, and wish that you did worship Him before for His greatness and sacrifice.

6. In sickness and in health

More post Christmas idolatry info. And a death knoll to the health, wealth and prosperity gospel (no gospel at all) wingnuts as Paul tells us about a Jesus freak who was sick and near death and the constant struggle of life as a Christian. The lambasting that you get from every quarter for telling people the real gospel of Jesus. Oh yeah Paul reminds again that you are called to suffer for Jesus.

5. Shine!

Ever heard ‘Thhis little light of mine’? How bright a star are you or are you a covetous idolator and want people to worship you as a star? Lots of star facts, a lot of fear facts (cause Paul tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling! from the God of Love) and lots of idolatry facts as it is ‘Christmas’. Lots of worship going on but it isn’t of Jesus, it is of self, money, greed and bling. Yet Christians are told to be different and Paul exhorts the Philippians to continue in the way they have. Worshipping Jesus for his great gift of grace. The real reason for the season… Jesus.

4. Christ’s example of humility; the real reason for Christmas

Jesus got down off of his throne so why don’t you get down off your sandcastle. This was just before Christmas 2007 and falls in just nicely. If Jesus can humble himself to serve us by dying on the cross in our place to pay the price for our sin then we can serve and worship him for His greatness and goodness. And then serve others because, again, of Jesus’ greatness and goodness. What a God and Saviour.

3. The Advance of the Gospel of… Jesus

Paul waxes lyrical about the Philippians not being a bunch of wet lettuce, lilly livered church goers who hide their light under a bushel. He is overjoyed that they loved telling others about Jesus. Even though it cost them dearly and can at times be quite scary. Not a ‘they call me names at work’ scary but a ‘lose your life for tallking about Jesus as Lord scary. Don’t hear much of that in the cosy comfy UK. Even though Paul tells the Philippians, and through scripture, that we are to suffer for Jesus…

2. Thanksgiving and Prayer

How thankful are you and who do you pray to? Lets face it we all do pray at somepoint but who to? And what are you thankful for? Here Paul lets the Philippians know, and us, why he is thankful, who to and why. And yes it is all to do with Jesus, for Jesus, because of Jesus, through Jesus, telling others about Jesus and talking to Jesus. Paul, the Philippians and we at Jesus Church Stoke Love JESUS. Do you?
